Driftwood House
Driftwood House sits on the last dune before the rocks. The architects gave it one rule: keep the wind out, let everything else in. The result is a house that hums on a still morning and goes quiet at six.
There is a long table that has seen four hundred dinners. There is a fireplace that takes a full arm of wood. The bedrooms face east. The bath in the main room faces nothing — only a window the height of the wall, and the sea beyond it.
"Salt on the railing at six-thirty. The rest of the day arrives slowly."
"There is a long table. It has seen four hundred dinners. It is ready for yours."
Where you'll be.
Shelley Point is a quiet residential estate twenty minutes from St Helena Bay. Low walls, slow roads, the kind of street where the gardener waves first.
The beach is a four-minute walk from the front door. Most mornings you'll have it to yourself before nine. There is a tidal pool at the south end and a coffee cart that opens when it feels like it.
Cape Town is two hours back down the R27. Most guests do the drive once and then stay put.
Mornings
The east-facing bedrooms catch the first light at six-thirty. Coffee on the deck. The garden's still cold; the railing has salt on it.
Long lunches
The oak table seats fourteen without anyone reaching. Cold langoustine, a glass of Chenin from Darling, a third hour you didn't plan for.
Last light
The fireplace takes a full arm of wood. Someone always finds a record. The bath fills slowly and the windows go violet.
